Plowin' straight ahead, come what may......

We're home safely and the 2012 Jimmy Buffett tour is now officially over.

Our final stop along the way was at Kolab Canyons in the NW corner of Zion National Park in Utah. We loved hiking the Taylor Creek Trail, an 8 km walk following the creek into a box canyon with beautiful red rock views along the way. We crossed the creek 41 times (each way)....and I may have missed a few! It was easy to rock-step across the creek but during the spring run-of I'm sure the degree of difficulty (or opportunity to get your feet wet) would increase significantly. Our only disappointment is that we have been driving right past this place for many years without realizing how beautiful it was. This part of the Park is only 5 minutes east of Interstate 15, the main route from western Canada to Las Vegas, Phoenix and Palm Springs. It is worth a visit if you are driving by there even if you only have time to drive through the Park to the viewpoint at the end of the road (15 minutes). It will give you an appreciation for the even more spectacular southern end of Zion NP which is our favourite NP in the U.S.

After our hike we drove on to Pocatello, Idaho, making good time on dry roads. That set us up for a full day drive back home yesterday, staying ahead of some rain in the forecast for the next day. We arrived home to a -10C temperature and some snow on the ground......a very chilly change in weather for us but the hoar frost on the trees made for some nice views.

We had a wonderful time on this trip. We did lots of hiking on beautiful trails, and completed several challenging ones along the way. We also hooked with many of our friends along the way, and good times always ensued. Jimmy would have been proud of us!

Countin' the hours till I get home......

All the campgrounds in Joshua Tree National Park were listed as "full" but we drove through them all just to make sure (it has worked for us in the past), but to no avail so we spent the night in Twentynine Palms, close enough to return to the park the next day. It was close to a Marine Corps Land Base Camp which resulted in a plethora of barber shops advertising 'marine style' cuts and several tattoo parlours. We resisted the urge. They also have some nice murals on the sides of buildings reminding us of the town of Chemainus on Vancouver Island.

Joshua Tree NP, in the Mojave Desert is 3,000 feet above sea level, populated with rounded granite rockpiles and Joshua Trees, which really stand out in the high desert landscape. There are lots of rock-climbers active in the park.......a good place to learn and practice your skills (rather than the extreme conditions in Zion NP). On our first day we did a short hike in Indian Cove and scrambled up a rock pile. The next day we did a 5 km hike up to Ryan Mountain (5500 feet) which offered magnificent park views following a well maintained trail with lots of steps. The Keys View Road drive ended with wonderful views of Palm Springs and the Salton Sea. We capped off the day with an excellent ranger-guided tour of Desert Queen Ranch where Bill & Frances Keys were early homesteaders. Not sure how Bill talked city-girl Frances into staying and raising a family in this remote area but it probably started with Bill agreeing to go shopping with her on a Black Friday in the early 1900's (it involved a 2 day wagon ride back then).

We then drove on for a return visit to Las Vegas, a decision made following the Stampeders Western Final win over B.C.  It was the only place we could be sure that the Grey Cup game would be televised in the U.S.  Our X-friends (Dave, ex-Cottonwood and Annie, ex-Xerox) called a Vegas connection to hook us up with a 'comp' room (thank you Dave) providing the option to have our own Grey Cup party in our room.....the Sportsbooks were also showing the game but because of the ongoing NFL games there wasn't any sound so we preferred the all-Canadian atmosphere of our room. Unfortunately, no one else showed up for our party, including the Stampeders who played poorly in the loss to the Argos. We still had a good party anyway!

Yesterday we drove 2 hours north to St. George, Utah where we will get the camper van prepared for the colder weather further north. Today we played our final golf round of the year at Sky Mountain, a nicely maintained course with beautiful views of the surrounding red rock canyons. The golf gods even presented the birthday girl with a birdie on a par 4 hole. A hot tub and a birthday dinner celebration followed.

Tomorrow we have an early morning appointment to get the van 'winterized' and then we will drive one hour north to the NW corner of Zion NP for a 10 km hike in Kolab Canyon, an area we haven't visited yet in one of our favourite U.S. National Parks. After that we will begin our drive back to Alberta. The weather forecast looks good so we expect to arrive back home sometime on Friday. Time to put the flip flops away.

I pushed the fool button.......

.......and went shopping on Black Friday (again). But more about that later.

Since leaving our Cottonwood friends and heading to the desert to dry out, we spent most of our time at Caliente Springs RV Resort in Desert Hot Springs, a few miles north of Palm Springs. We visited with some Okotoks neighbours (John & Grace) who spend their winters here in a beautiful park model home with a large deck. We made regular trips to the community hot tubs and pools which were serviced by the natural acquifiers below the ground in the Desert Hot Springs area. We played golf at nearby Desert Dunes, a Robert Trent Jones design that was purchased 3 years ago by a Canadian group including Kevin Martin (the curler).......unfortunately there were tell-tale signs that they may also be experiencing some financial issues. On another day we did a nice hike from the park up to Flag Mountain and had a pre-Thanksgiving dinner with John & Grace, and 150 of their friendly park friends in the community clubhouse.

During the week Rhonda used her spare time to strategically plan her Black Friday attack, bringing back nightmares of my 6:30 am Nashville experience last year. I have successfully avoided Boxing Day in Canada in the past but this is now becomming a worriesome trend. My personal belief about Boxing Day is that it is for the people who have been naughty during the year, and subsequently didn't get the gifts they wanted from Santa on Christmas Day, requiring them to go out in sub-zero temperatures, line up, and then pay for the things they desire. Fortunately, I have been a good boy all my life and Santa has always taken care of my needs. With Black Friday occuring a month before Christmas, it makes a little more sense to go out and cross off items from the family Xmas list, and my dear wife seems to quickly seize upon the opportunity of my willingness to help out in this regard. Last year, Black Friday in-store sales started on Thanksgiving Thursday which we avoided because of the ire from many who thought that it interrupted family get-togethers. Male NFL fans however think it is a wonderful way to keep their wives and girlfriends busy while they watch football all day long........which is probably why the Thursday sales have been expanded this year. So our Chief of Staff decided that the best deals were likely to be on Thursday and we should not let the opportunity slip away.

Our experience started with a search for a restaurant open for Thanksgiving dinner, which took some time as most of them were rightfully closed. We had an ample supply of food in the van but felt like eating out if something was available, saving "our" energy for the sales later that evening. We finally found a spot in Palm Desert, not too far from the stores that Rhonda had selected for "incredible" savings. (I took her word for it it which I have learned to do.........let me know if you need any further marriage advice). Anyway, the restaurant was packed and the short-staffed help were doing their best to accommodate everyone. Still some customers where annoyed that they weren't getting enough attention from our overworked waitress and voiced their complaints. It wasn't an issue for us, we don't sweat the small stuff anymore. It makes one wonder if the unhappy people eating out alone on Thanksgiving Day were travellers like us or  they didn't have families and friends to be thankful for.

After our meal we drove over to a large plaza for the two main events, an 8 pm 'special' at one store and a midnight super-deal at another. The first store was already packed at 7 pm when we arrived with long lines beside the many in-store special bargains that were being carefully guarded by store employees until the 8 pm kick-off but my lady's pre-planning worked to perfection (she is clever) and we were there just in time to secure our treasures (or perhaps yours on Christmas Day). Then we returned to the van, set up the bed and went to sleep for a couple of hours, waking up at 11:30 pm. When we noticed a large line-up of approximatley 500 people already waiting for the midnight store opening we quickly got dressed and joined the party.....at least it was a lot more civilized than the 11,000 people in the New York City Macy's line-up. Once in the store we quickly obtained the desired items, paid for them immediately and re-positioned them to the van. At least I did. I suggested Rhonda continue looking for deals....she had done a fine job so far.....but instead of retiring to our comfy king-sized bed, the adrenalin rush had hit and I returned to the store to protect her from the mob mentality of trying to rescue the American economy in one night. As it turns out she found a few more opportunities.........unfortunately by this time the line-up to the multiple cash registers was  all the way to the back of the store and I patiently waited in line, sacrificing 30 minutes of valuable sleep time while Rhonda found a couple more 'deals'. I must be in love.......is there any other explanation?

Today we drove an hour north to Joshua Tree National Park..........there are no stores for 25 miles so this is a perfect re-hab facility ( a requirement since our one room home isn't as spacious as it used to be with all of our purchases). A few hikes are in order before we make a previously unplanned return to Las Vegas to catch the Grey Cup game on Sunday........Go Stamps Go!

Everything looking good so far

Pinnacle re-union

Ran into a chum with a bottle of rum......

Actually it was several chums, and several bottles of rum. Palm Springs turned into a Cottonwood re-union, most of it spent on the 19th hole. Our home base for the week was at a lovely Rancho La Quinta rental property with Warren & Deb, and Kelvin & Brenda. On three different days we hooked up with three more CW couples (JD & Susan, Dave & Annie, Tom & Jan), so every day included golf and a party afterwards. Several hot tubs, lots of laughs and some lost brain cells along the way (which is a good thing if you subscribe to Cliff's buffalo theory from Cheers). We played at 5 different courses (G.C. at La Quinta, Palm Desert, Desert Princess, SilverRock, Desert Willows - Firecliff) with the last two being the most picturesque and difficult. The other challenge was daylight, as afternoon rounds have to be completed by 5 pm when daylight disappears in minutes and it becomes completely dark without a dusk warning. Two of our rounds were completed just in time.

One evening we went to the Westin Hotel to listen to Man of Sax (aka Art of Jazz)  and his band for a very entertaining experience on the patio surrounded by Lava Heaters which seem to be the rage down here and are very effective with their heat distribution besides looking great. Another evening we ventured into downtown Palm Springs for Village Fest (night market), a nice Mexican dinner and perhaps one too many Margaritta's (for some). AC/DC hosted a wonderful dinner and evening for the entire CW group, while two anonymous ladies serenaded the rest of us (or at least those that didn't wear noise mufflers). Yesterday we all went over to JD & Susan's to watch the CFL West Final and it was a noisy affair with our Stamps overcoming the hometown BC Lions. It was a great way to finish our week with all of our CW friends, some of whom were staying and others who were returning home.

We have retreated to Desert Hot Springs, a few miles north of Palm Springs. We hope the mineral waters will help to rejuvenate our bodies! While we lay low for a few days, Rhonda is plotting her Black Friday strategy. I'm sure the American economy will appreciate her efforts.

I'm just glad I don't live in a trailer.....

Since arriving in Phoenix we have enjoyed the luxury of staying in two beautiful homes, taking a break from our camper van. Our first stop was at former neighbours Dave & Susan's winter retreat in the Desert Mountain community. With 6 Jack Nicklaus designed courses available to the members it is a golfer's paradise and was also hosting the Senior PGA final tournament (Schwab Cup) while we were there. We went to the final day of the tournament and followed the final two groups around the course, spending most of our time watching the final group and eventual winner, Tom Lehman, destroy the rest of the field with a 5 stroke victory. It was fun to watch the action up close although a little disheartening to realize that almost all of the 30 players who qualified for the 'seniors' championship were younger than we were. Perhaps there is another tour that I should start dreaming about.

Dave and I did a morning hike up Sunset Summit and continued further on to China Wall. There were many more trails within their hilly community and the active residents seemed to be making good use of them. On another day we golfed on one of the 6 courses that backed on to Dave & Susan's property. The men walked while the women rode.......the ladies made the better decision as the climbs and space between holes took their toll on me during the back nine (part of the host's strategy I'm sure and it worked out in his favour as I faded down the stretch!).

Our next stop was in Scottsdale to visit with Rhonda's uncle and aunt (Murray & Mavis) who spend their summers in their NW Calgary home and down here in the winter. They also have a beautiful home which backs on to the Troon golf course and have been wonderful hosts.  We have enjoyed catching up with them and their family, and spent Tuesday evening following the U.S. election results. We`re glad to see an end to all the negative campaign ads and pleased to see that Sheriff Joe (pink outfits for the inmates) was elected again for a 6th term. Yesterday Murray and I went out golfing while the ladies relaxed at home. Today the ladies will have pedicures.......Murray and I declined the invitation to join them.

We have one more visit planned while we are here with some Cottonwood friends (Brian & Shirley-Ann) and then we will move on to Palm Springs.

It's 5 o'clock somewhere........

The party continued after the Jimmy Buffett concert.......I don't think the concert had any effect on that, it just happens when you are in Las Vegas, one of the few places in the world where you can find anything you want 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 12 months a year. We managed to spend a few hours a day at the MGM pool with our friends, relaxing but not necessarily giving our livers a rest.

We also found time to see the start of the World Series of Poker final table who were all guaranteed a 9th place payout of $750K but were more focused on the winner's $8.6M bounty.  It was fun to watch their family and friends cheering sections who were all likely flown to LV by their hosts who had big pay days ahead. The final 3 players were all under 28 years old and Rhonda took the opportunity to remind me that my dream of making it to the final table was becoming less likely with the passing of years (mine) where the toll of successive 12-14 hour days at the table made it more difficult for 'older' players to maintain their focus........my dream continues.

A trip to visit some Calgary friends in their Sumerlin winter home, a stop into the Pawn Stars store, several nice meals and happy hour stops along with a few shopping trips filled up our days. No extended gambling sessions with our group, and no serious damage, so we didn't help pay for all the neon lights. Last night we all went to the LV Halloween Parade near Freemont Street and it was quite entertaining to see the outfits and vehicles that had been dressed up. We had dinner at an outdoor patio on the strip watching filming of Hangover 3 (helicopters dropping parachute actors towards Caesars Palace and Belagio) and more of the dress-up fun. Several ideas for our next visit!

Today, Rhonda and I went out to Red Rock Canyon for some hiking and a tour of Spring Mountain Ranch, the home of several 1950-60's celebrities and some interesting history. We caught up with our friends just before they were departing for their trip back to cold and snowy Calgary. We had a great time together but fortunately we don't have jobs to return too, so our trip will continue on.
